Movie Review for: The Dark Crystal

“Don’t take the brown acid” should be the warning label for this movie. Watching the Dark Crystal and similar cult classic movies like The Labyrinth is entering the dark side of Jim Henson’s Muppet productions. You will not find Kermit the Frog singing the Rainbow Connection in this movie. But you may cling tighter to your pillow as you sink deeper into the rabbit hole.

>A far cry from Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street; push ‘play’ for a twisted fairy tale. With no humans on the screen, The Dark Crystal is a puppet-filled dream or nightmare. It is a cult classic all its own and rightly owns its faithful followers.

The Dark Crystal may appeal more to teenagers and young adults rather than children. It is a creative tale that will captivate almost anyone who lived through the 80s. But most people born post-Miami Vice may not fully appreciate Jim Hensen’s masterpiece.

The Dark Crystal is an original story that touches on some creepy elements Grimm’s Fairy Tales has offered for years (before Disney stole them and made them more cuddly). If nothing else, The Dark Crystal is a movie from left field you just may enjoy.
